Orville Richard Burns Obituary (1925

World War II Veteran, Orville Richard Burns, was born on August 3rd, 1925 in Tacoma, Washington, and on January 5th, 2015 he entered the gates of heaven. After marrying his soulmate, Joyce, on February 19th, 1949, they treasured and cherished 64 years of joy as a couple and now are hand in hand for eternity. Together they raised five children, and Orv, fondly known as 'Uncle Orv', was a constant role model for thousands in his church. Over the years he taught numerous Bible studies and escorted countless youth to The Dunes Bible Camp in Ocean Park, Washington. Orv loved music, and was involved in the band at Bremerton High School, playing drums. During WWII he tried out for Glen Miller's band, but was transferred to a new assignment before he found out the results. This same skill, love, and talent he continued to enjoy after the war, and upon being honorably discharged from the army he joined The Drum and Bugle Corps in Bremerton. He marched in a number of parades in the local area. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1943 and served in the Artillery Section of an elite group known as The Americal Division. He participated in operations conducted in Bougainville, The Philippines, and several additional locations throughout the Pacific Region. The forward advance of his division led right to the streets of Tokyo at the end of the war. Bremerton became Orv's home for the remainder of his 89 years. After the war, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, starting out as a letter carrier for businesses and stores in downtown Bremerton and eventually taking on the role of manager at the former Wycoff Station. He is preceded by his spouse, Joyce, and leaves behind five children: Pamela (Rene) Borne, Sharon (Scott) Milner, Randall Burns, Tracy (Jim) Storey, and Bruce Burns, as well as 10 grandchildren, and 8-1/2 great grandchildren. Celebration of Orv's life will be on January 24th at 1:00 P.M. at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
