Lindley H. Smith Obituary (1921

Lindley H. Smith passed away January 15th surrounded by his loving family. Lindley was born September 16, 1921 in Wenatchee, WA to Mack and Ethel Smith and was raised in Miller River and Arlington, WA. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1939. After Pearl Harbor, Lindley entered the Army Air Force in December 1941 and spent the war in the South Pacific, mostly in New Guinea. He was very proud of his military service in the 41st Fighter Squadron. After the war, while attending the University of Washington, Lindley married Georgiana (Toni) Handy. He graduated with a degree in Forestry in 1949. During his career, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service, the Puget Sound Log Scaling Bureau, and was Log Distributing Manager for Pope & Talbot for 26 years, retiring in 1985. Lindley was a respected member of the community and his profession. He served as President of the Log Scaling Bureau, President of the North Kitsap Credit Union and served on both of their boards. Lindley was a lifelong sports enthusiast as both an athlete and supporter. He served as the President of the North Kitsap Little League for 4 years and the President of the Babe Ruth League for 19 years. He also was the President of the North Kitsap High School Sports Booster Club in 1967 and was instrumental in obtaining the current football stadium. Lindley was an avid outdoorsman; enjoying camping, fishing and hunting. Lindley is survived by wife, Toni of 66 years, his daughter Linda Wickstrom (Wayne); son Greg (Shana); son Richard (Bonnie); and daughter Janice Spencer (Dan); 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and is survived by his sister Maxine Scher (Enumclaw) and brother Mack Smith (Oregon City, OR). A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 28th at 1:00 PM at the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion, in Port Gamble.
