JoAnne Ruth O'Connor Obituary (1935

JoAnne R O'Connor passed away March 19, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in 1935, grew up in Federal Way and graduated from Federal Way High School as salutatorian. Soon after graduating, she married the love of her life, Michael L. O'Connor. Through their 60+ years of marriage, they lived a wonderful life filled with family and friends, kindness and love. Starting their life together in North Tacoma, JoAnn and Mike welcomed four children - two sons and two daughters. In 1968 they built their dream home on the shores of Horsehead Bay and began what would become a near fairy tale life. In the 45 years they spent together at Horsehead Bay, JoAnn was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends. In her kitchen she would cook the best meals ever, including homemade rolls, jam and desserts. They entertained thousands of people over the years in their home and on their deck where everyone was welcomed and treated as family. Their 4th of July celebrations would draw over 100 people, with plenty of food, drink, water sports and fun! Over the years, two of their children and one grandson also built/bought on the shores of Horsehead Bay. JoAnne enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren beyond measure. She and Mike were there to welcome each grandchild and attended every sports event, concert, graduation, and wedding. Her life revolved around her family. Along with their four children, JoAnn loved and spoiled her 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. No doubt 'GG' was the best great grandma a child could have. JoAnn was also was fond of her numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. She always loved the family picnics where she could spend time with them. JoAnne loved to travel and along with Mike, enjoyed cross county train and motor home trips, vacations in Ireland, Mexico and Alaska. She accompanied Mike on many fishing trips both local and in Alaska and Canada. In celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary they treated all of their children and their spouses to a 12 day cruise around the Canary Islands. Highlights included dinner with the captain and touring around the beautiful islands with local guides. In her later years, JoAnne dealt with the effects of Parkinson's disease. Yet she never let it diminish her spirit or kindness. She was our rock and matriarch. JoAnne will be forever missed by her loving family. She leaves behind her husband, Mike, daughters Debbie and Teresa (Rocky), 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Her two sons, Michael and Shawn, proceeded her in death. She also leaves behind two daughter in laws, Mary and Michelle. It is difficult to express our grief in losing our beloved JoAnne, but the memories and love she shared will remain forever etched in the hearts of the many, many people who loved and adored her.
