Phyllis Victoria Ullin Obituary (1914

PYHLLIS VICTORIA ULLIN Phyllis was born in Spokane, WA, Nov 26, 1914 and was raised in Mt. Vernon, WA., where her father was a salesman. After her older sister Marion died of appendicitis around 1925, the family moved to Lewiston, ID. where Phyllis attended high school. She then moved with her mother to Bellingham to attend Bellingham Normal School (now Western Washington University). Her mother worked for the Donovan family. Her father moved to Hayward, California to find work in the shipyard and building houses. Phyllis graduated from Bellingham Normal in 1937. She took up a teaching position in Avon schools near Mount Vernon where she had many childhood friends. Phyllis met Chet Ullin through mutual friends in 1938. They first dated at a roller skating party in Mount Vernon. The courtship included ice skating in Seattle where Chet was employed in the Seattle schools, participating in the college summer outdoor program thatChet worked in. In 1939 she went to Hayward to visit her dad, and Chet joined her there for a visit to the San Francisco World's Fair. Phyllis and Chet were married on June 8, 1940. They set up housekeeping in Seattle. Chet was promoted from teaching to work in the school district ofices responsible for visual aids and instructional materials. They moved into Chet's parents house in West Seattle when their first son Gary was born in February 20, 1943.. Two years later on March 10, 1945, Son Jay was born. In 1946m Chet accepted a job in the Bremerton and Kitsap schllos as a Director of Audio and Visual Aids, so the family moved to Bremerton where the third son, Jim, was born on August 31, 1947. The next years were spent raising the family, participating in PTA, Cub Scouts, where she was Den Mother 3 diferent times for each son, supporting Boy Scout activities. In 1965 (?) Phyllis returned to work as a teacher's aid in the Bremerton schools. She retired in 1975.(?) Phyllis was active in many organizations including Our Savior's Lutheran Church, PEO, Retired Teachers, Bremerton Yacht Club, Western Washington University Alumni, and Son's of Norway. Phyllis loved to travel, especially to Sweden to visti relatives. Other destinations including Europe, Israel-Egypt, Australia-New Zealand. she enjoyed boating and working at their vacation house on San Juan Island. Phyllis is survived by her husband Chet, Son Jay, from Seattle, son Jim and his wife Joan from Ferndale, and their family, son Kenui (Ferndale), daughter Malia (Maui), her husband Jeff Gerard, and their sons Nainoa and Nakoa. A Celebration of Phyllis life was held March 1, 2002 in Lewis Funeral Chapel, Bremerton, Washington,with graveside service following on Maarch 2, 2002 in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Wa
