Oakley W. Cheney Obituary (1912

Commander Oakley W. Cheney, U.S. Navy, Retired, Known as Jack since meeting his future wife in Bremerton, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2011 in Silverdale, Washington. He was born on a farm in Iowa County, Iowa on July 27, 1912. Jack's parents were Floyd Lester Cheney and Delila Ethel "Geiger" Cheney. In 1931, after spending his youth on farms in Iowa, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served for thirty years on numerous ships and ashore in Shanghai and Tsingtao, China, Panama Canal Zone, Heidelberg, Germany, California, Virginia, Washington State and the District of Columbia. He was commissioned an officer in 1942 and retired at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in 1961. In 1934 Jack Cheney married Thelma Marie Christenson at Manette Community Church. On December 2, 2010, they celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary. They are survived by, Oakley W. Cheney, Jr. of Houston, TX and Carol Lynn Proshek of Pensacola, FL. They are also survived by 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Jack and Tillie's retirement years were spent in Washington. From 1961 to 1979 on Whidbey Island, 1979 to 1999 in Manette and since 1999 in Silverdale, WA. Memorial services will be held at Manette Community Church at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 13th.
