Chet Gausta Obituary (1916

Chester (Chet) Gausta, 9/12/16 - 1/16/12, born in Poulsbo to Albert and Inga (Tideman) Gausta. Predeceased by wife Barbara, two brothers Ralph and Lloyd, and an infant sister. Survived by nieces and nephews, cousins and Barbara's three children and their families, including granddaughters Nicole and Brianna. 1937 NKHS grad, Chet was offered a basketball scholarship to WA State College, but opted to play shortstop for semi-pro Poulsbo Town Team. 1995 inductee to Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame. Played on Poulsbo VFW basketball team in 1948 national tournament. Served in New Guinea in WWII and honorably discharged 1945 as Staff Sgt. Famous for catching WA state record 70 1/2 lb Chinook salmon in 1964. Fish on display at Poulsbo Museum. Wrote many magazine and newspaper articles about sports and fishing, and was a sports columnist for The Herald. Chet held numerous jobs. Favorites - Ralph's Shoprite, Jim's Richfield and fishing in AK and cooking on the tugboat P&T Pioneer. He was a member of Poulsbo First Lutheran, Poulsbo Historical Society, VFW, Elks and Northwest Outdoor Writers Assn.
