ADELLA LEONA BOWMAN For my friend Adella: Adella Bowman was born July 11, 1919 in Manchester, Iowa. Her father, a doctor, left her colorful memories of a Midwest doctor's family during the depression. Her father never hesitated to deliver a baby in a snowstorm for a bakery treat instead of cash. Adella and her mother were very close, sharing a great mutual trust and devotion. Her mother passed away at the age of 101 and to the end, Adella protected and loved her. She often cried when she spoke of her mother. Adella had two older brothers who were active in the military during World War II. One brother commanded a large aircraft carrier and attained the rank of Admiral. Adella worked at the National Archives in Washington D.C. During this period of her life she kept many fond memories of life with her brother, the Admiral, in the capital city. Adella went to the White House on several occasions and visited with Eleanor Roosevelt. She could still describe Mrs. Roosevelt's warmth and kindness and her beautiful purple dress, many years later. She talked about places to eat called ''Hot Shops'' in D.C., where she would go and have fun with her friends. Adella and her mother moved to Bremerton in the fifties and bought a small home together. Adella worked in the Supply Department at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until her retirement in 1962. Adella traveled after her mother's death and told me about Mainland China, Japan, Europe and many other places that gave her the memories she cherished. In her later years, she and I enjoyed our dinner out once a week and drives past the ''old house''. We often drove through Bremerton talking and sharing memories of what used to be. I had the honor of being Adella's friend and neighbor for over 20 years. After she lost her mother we adopted each other, so to say. I shall miss you, my friend; I loved and respected you. Diane
