James Rodney Ferrell, Lt Col (USAF, Ret), of Poulsbo, passed away March 26, 2011 at Hospice Care Center in Bremerton, at the age of 90. The son of James Leonard and Maizie (Fertig) Ferrell, he was born November 29, 1920, in Huntington, WV.
James graduated from Huntington High School in 1939 and soon afterward, enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After initial training as an aircraft mechanic, he was accepted for pilot training and graduated in class 42X, an experimental, accelerated pilot training course. He served in the Pacific during WWII, flying B-29s and C-54s in the Berlin Airlift. He flew B-29s again in the Korean Conflict and C-124s and C-141s in Vietnam. He was the consummate airman.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mimi (Baird); daughter, Loriann Ferrell-Soto; grandsons, Alex and Christopher Soto-Ferrell; and sister, Audrey Ferrell Dyck. His daughter, Peggy Lea, preceded him in death in 1976.
Visitation will be held at 10 am on Thurs, March 31st at The Stone Chapel Poulsbo Mortuary, followed by a service at 10:30 am.
